I like using slightly differing skin tones with these guys, but tie the whole unit together with the fur, leather and cloth colours.

25-28mm Chronicle Black Orc sculpted by Nick Lund very early1980sfantasy figure, rare

I have not painted a fantasy figure in years. I was digging about in a box of spares and odds and I found this figure  in a box, the last remnant of my large collection of Nick Lund's  very early 1980's Chronicle range before he started working with Citadel.  This find got me  remembering how a lot of my initial interest in miniatures was fired by early Fantasy figures; Citadel,Chronicle,Ral Partha, Minifigs,Black Baron all played there part in parting me from my pocket money.

 I sold many of them for  funds when I was a student and now wish I had not!

 Such is life, anyway I have decided to honour the last figure of this collection of wonderful Orcs by painting him properly,( none of the others ever got painted) and seeing as he has no mates to keep him company I shall sell him on Ebay and hope he is reunited with more of his kind!

Below shows the Orc in progress. It's quite enjoyable and liberating painting something from  fantasy.Although the sculpting is quite stylised, it works really well with Orcs, I feel these are a wonderful "lost range" with loads of character.

I have just got my hands on a standard bearer from this range, so maybe I  shall start painting up a unit, really enjoyed painting this guy, here he is below with his new friend and I have found three more of his kind to keep him company, early Warhammer  memories, good stuff !

And recently a Black Orc Shaman 21c was acquired  to take care of the rest of the orcs medical and religious needs !

Two Orcs riding wolves and another 8 Orc infantry have also been sourced from this range.

28mm Perry Miniatures 1st Crusade mounted Command Group of Raymond ofToulouse

A command group of 4 mounted Knights, including Raymond,standard bearer and musician has just been completed. 

Above shows the command group on its movement tray. The banner is based on the cross of Toulouse, which according to "tradition" was carried by Raymond on the first crusade. The standard bearers shield is also based on the ancient cross.

Here the figures are shown without there movement tray and are suitable for use as individual figures or rebasing with a larger unit of knights( I will be painting more over the coming year).Below more pictures  from the rear and side.

28mm Gripping Beast Plastics Saxon Thegns x 8

 These 8 figures are being sold off in in two lots of 4 figures on ebay .co.uk. They will be followed by a further 20 or so Saxon thegns including a couple of  command groups of 4.

I have made some alterations to these figures, most notably adding some studs to the leather shields. Although I like interesting shield designs I think they might have been less common in this period than they are frequently depicted especially among the rank and file. If you look at the Bayeux tapestry,by far the most common shield design on both sides are the plain coloured shields with studs. To my mind it makes a lot of sense, a functional utilitarian shield,wooden boards held together with leather and raw hide, studded to hold the Iron work on and possibly as a form of decoration/additional protection. Why spend time or money decorating something that is just gonna get hacked up anyway?  Maybe designs would identify yourself to your kith and kin on the battlefield and bind your tribe/unit/army together. We know that the earlier Roman legionaires or later heraldic colours did this. So what about the Dark Ages? Interesting .

Any way I think the studded leather shields on these guys look great !
